UDPC works closely with the Utah State Parks Boating Program. Many Utah Drownings take place on our lakes, rivers and waterways. For boating, paddle and open water safety information please visit them at boating.utah.gov

ABCD's of Drowning Prevention

The ABC's can help you remember the vital steps in preventing water-related injuries or death. These steps include the best practice of parents and caregivers to ensure safety in, on and around the water.

Adult Supervision

B

Barriers

  • Install 60" tall, non-climbable fences around the pool with self-closing gates
  • Use a power-operated pool cover
  • Install alarms on back doors and windows so you know when they have been opened
C

Classes

  • Take a CPR and rescue technique class
  • Have your child take swimming classes - Children who learn to swim are 88% less likely to drown
D

Devices

  • EVERYONE wear a personal flotation device or LIFEJACKET when on open bodies of water
  • Non-swimmers wear lifejacets near all bodies of water
  • Keep a phone by the pool at all times
  • Drain kiddie pools after every use
