NRPA-AARP 10-Week Walking Program
Walk Your
Community to Better Health
National
Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and AARP
encourage people over the age of 50 to engage in healthy
behaviors like walking. Studies show that walking just 30
minutes, five days a week can help significantly reduce the
risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity,
osteoporosis, arthritis, and some cancers.
That's why we've teamed up
again this year to offer the NRPA-AARP 10-week walking program
to park and recreation agencies. This free walking program
supports the prevention of chronic disease through
increased physical activity, and will also highlight
the many benefits of parks and recreation. Park and
recreation agencies will help participants find safe places to
walk, and will provide resources to help individuals take
personal responsibility for their health. Selected
agencies will receive a free program guidebook, pedometers,
and information to provide weekly education sessions on
physical activity and nutrition.
If
you are interested in implementing the program in your
community, please complete our short application; 30
agencies will be selected to receive the free program
materials and support resources.
